A BN or otherwise known as a butt naked. Some consider to be a rite of passage others the ultimate sense of freedom. One thing is for sure, once you pull a BN insulation feels so limiting and suffocating. BN's have been a part of ski culture for as long as anyone can recall. Any hardcore skier will tell you a BN is a sign of a true ski bum. One who strips down to get down is one who is connected with nature, it can be described as rather rad. Most importantly it can be a lot of fun.
Tahoe skiers are a different breed, the lure and legend of naked skiing runs deep. Not to mention our world-renowned spring skiing, is a bit of a thing on the West Coast. From Shane McConkey infamously getting a lifetime ban from Vail Mountain after pulling a BN during a mogul competition and throwing a backflip. This rejuvenated the movement. Since then, skiing naked has literally been game on or clothes off. From the game of GNAR to Boot Tan Fest (more below) skiing naked is a part of ski culture. I mean Chelsea Handler loves it so much that it has turned into an annual tradition on her birthday. What does everyone else know that you don't?
There really is nothing like getting in the nude and then sending it down a line. It is exhilarating. It's freeing, fun, and vitalizing for the soul. Plus, it's quiet refreshing, especially after going uphill on the skin track. Warning: laughs and giggles will ensue. Skiing naked is such a thing that Boot Tan Fest in Glenwood, Colorado has an annual event for women to come together to climb uphill. That's right, there is a whole event for women to meet up, skin up, strip down, and turn.
So, now that you're thinking of pulling a BN here are some tips:
Be mindful of where you strip down. Don't just start ripping layers off on a weekend in the middle of the resort. Backcountry is always a safer bet to avoid anyone else. Plus, criminal charges are never worth it inbounds you are subject to the resort's rules and regulations. Basically, be smart.
Know your skill level. Before you charge down a mountain in the nude be aware of your skill level. Learning to ski you fall a lot, falling while skiing naked? Not an option. Assuming you're pulling a BN in the bc be sure to take an AIARE I course prior to venturing out.
Use your GORETEX jackets/ pants as a way to keep your socks dry before skiing down.
Check the weather. Spring ski day will beat a blizzard white-out storm as far as safety. Plus, it's far more comfortable.
Bring a backpack. Obviously skiing with poles and clothes in your hands is less than ideal. Make your life easy and bring a backpack to conveniently store all of your belongings.
Don't forget the sunscreen! Yes, you are in the snow, considering the snow acts as a negative albedo. This means the snow reflects more UV rays, and at a higher elevation compared to sea level the sun is more potent. Want to avoid a nasty burn? Lather up.
