Ski Review
Intro: What Atomic says: “A pure all-conditions freeride ski, the women's Atomic Maven 103 CTI is designed to charge hard and driven to explore new terrain. Built similar to the sturdy, lower-impact design of the unisex Maverick 105 CTI, the Maven 103 CTI core construction uses less metal, fiberglass and resin, and features a Power Woodcore that uses a unique blend of ash and poplar wood to improve the ski’s stability and significantly reduce vibration when at speed. CTI Powered, the core utilizes a precise mixture of carbon and titanal to deliver the perfect balance of agility and sturdiness for hard-charging, highly energetic skiing. All Mountain Rocker and the uniquely beveled three-dimensional HRZN 3D tip increases surface area for improved float in deeper snow conditions. The ski of choice for Atomic skiers like Amie Engebretson, it’s the smooth and cruisy, yet firm and fierce all-mountain performance of the Maven 103 CTI that keeps her chasing after the next turn"
Review
Carving: The Atomic Maven 103 CTi has built-in features that make it a powerhouse. Stability was at the forefront of the design, even with reduced weight. With a Power Woodcore blend of ash and poplar wood, it is a recipe for you to press the gas and hit send. The Power Woodcore blend reduces vibrations when at those high mphs.
We found the Maven 103 CTi to get on edge quickly and with ease. Once on edge with the signature CTi Powered core by Atomic agility, it instantly griped with a quick hip turn initiation. On the groomers, the Maven 103 CTi was a joy in fresh, soft snow. Carving was a blast with its all-mountain rocker profile (20/65/15).
We do have to note in crud the Maven 103 CTi left us wanting more bite from the ski. Skidouts were not a concern, yet those of you who live in areas with high ranges in temperatures may want something with a little more oomph for those icy spots. If you are in range that has deep cold snow don't wait too long to give the Maven a turn or two.
Bumps: We noted the quickness in the Maven above. With her lightweight core, she loves to "pop". On the bumps, we found the Maven 103 CTi to be fast and easy. With each pole plant the Maven instinctively dances with you. Even with the 103 mm waist, the Maven didn't feel "tight" in moguls. Even at the longer length of 170 cm the Maven never felt too long.
All Mountain / Big Mountain: When She-Shredz gave the Maven 103 CTi a test, there were 10 inches of fresh snow. As soon as we took the Maven off-piste, this is where the ski really wanted to be unleashed. Big mountain terrain and this ski go hand in hand. With the lightness and fast turn initiation, when things become a bit more techie on a line, you won't be left second-guessing yourself. The Maven has a way of generating confidence. Allowing you to feel that you're in the driver's seat even when you're not.
In the freshies, the Maven playfully dances with you. With Atomics HRZN 3D tip and all-mountain rocker create an increased surface area, making for improved float when it's deeper than the forecast called for. It's not a true powder ski, yet it has a place in the quiver for those ladies searching for a daily driver that's a bit on the wider side.
Overall Takeaways: Spicy riders looking for a light and quick ski that is agile and won't put up a fight, your search is over. Great in soft conditions and off-piste, the Maven 103 should be on your radar if you are looking for a wider daily driver. While not the best in the crud/ icy conditions compared to others in the big mountain ski range, the Maven holds her own with unique features.
